Term 4 Week 4, 5 and 6

Wow!  We really have been busy.  My apologies for not posting sooner.  I now have 3 weeks to cover!

Week 4 was all about Science and Maths.  We had our maths afternoon and science expo week.  There were so many fun activities!

We have built our read to self stamina up to 11 minutes! Now we are learning a new way to practice reading.  It is called Read to Someone and we get to share our book with a friend.  Here is how we do Read to Someone.

We sit,
Elbow to
Elbow
Knee to
Knee
We read one person at a time.
We concentrate on the book.
we sit in our own space with our partner.
We use quiet voices.
We hold the book in the middle of us.

Miss R thinks it wont take very long for us to get our stamina up to 10 minutes with Read to Someone because we are already so good at Read to Self.

We have been learning about tens frames and building numbers with them.

OUr buddies helped us reply to all the comments we got from Mrs Mueller's class in Texas.

We have used Pic Collage to create a mixed up chameleon. It is kind of like the chameleon in Eric Carle's Mixed Up Chameleon except ours is all mixed up with Australian animals.  We can't wait to hear what animals Mrs Mueller's class thinks we have used.  We also can't wait to see what their mixed up chameleons look like!

Term 4 Week 1 and 2 and 3

My apologies for the slow post.  The start of term 4 has been very busy and I suspect may continue that way as we race towards the end of the year.

Here are a few snapshots of what we got up to in our first three weeks back.

We now have a Book Café in our classroom.

Building airports, houses and planes.

Our dentist is turning into a hairdressers. Mr CW was looking very smart by the time he walked out!

We have started learning different ways to read.  We have started by learning how to read to ourselves.  We call this Read to Self.  When we read to self we need to;
* sit in our own space
* use quiet voices
* concentrate and read the book the whole time

We are talking about how we can get better at reading to ourselves.  We need to improve our stamina. If we have good stamina we can do things for longer. If we practice doing read to self our stamina will get a little bit better each time.  So far we can read for 7 minutes.

In maths we have been learning to add two groups of numbers together.  We have learnt that when you add two numbers together the answer will be bigger than the numbers we started with.

In computer we had another go at using the Paint program.  We created pictures and then printed them out.

We have been investigating Australian animals.  There are some animals that you can only find in Australia, like kangaroos and koalas.

We collaged our own Australian animals.

This week we are researching an Australian animal.  We are using the pictures in non fiction books to give us information about where our chosen animal lives and what it eats.  We are using that information to paint a home for our animal.

We are going to share what we have learnt about Australian animals with our new friends in Texas.

Miss R has linked up with a lovely school in Texas and we are going to learn from each other.  We are going to teach them about Australian animals and they will teach us about American animals.  We have already learnt lots of new things from them. You can check out what we are sharing by clicking on the link in the box at the top right of the blog.

In our PATHS time we have been learning what to do if someone does something that makes us angry or sad.  Twiggle taught us how to do turtle.  Here is what we do;
1  Stop and go into your shell
2  Take a big, deep breath
3  Tell what the problem is.

We acted out some times when we could use turtle to help us solve a problem.

We continued our research by finding out the features of our Australian animal.  We then used that to create our animal from clay.  When they are dry we will be able to paint them and put them into the home we created for them.

This is one of our new maths activities.  It helps us practice numbers that come before and after other numbers.

Term 3 Week 10

A very belated post!

We learnt about the letter y.

We covered our y with lots of yellow things.

We have now learnt the whole alphabet!  We shared our alphabet books with our buddies before taking them home.

This week was Mission week.

We made pledges on hand prints to do something or give up something in support of those less fortunate.

Mission week concluded with a variety of activities to reflect different cultures around the world.

We sang karaoke.

We ate rice from banana leaves.

We carried water on our heads and tried to escape from the wild animals.

We played drums.

Thank you for all your support throughout term 3.

Term 3 Week 9

We found the missing letter q.

We made queens crowns.  Queen starts with q.

Here we are giving a queenly wave.

Our space corner has become a dentists office.  We are having fun playing at the dentists.

We made Mars and it's two moons.  Mars is a red planet.  Mars has two moons.

We made some asteroids for our space wall.

We learnt that our solar system is in the Milky Way.  We made our own Milky ways and our solar system is just one tiny speck of glitter.

On Thursday Mrs M organised an incursion for us.  They taught us how water gets into the Swan river.

We poured water and watched how it got to the river.

We mixed stuff into the water.  The lady read a story and talked about how stuff in the water makes algae.  The algae is bad for the water and the animals.

We had our prayer service.  It was beautiful.  Thank you to all the families that came to celebrate with us.

Term 3 Week 8

This week we learnt about the letter x.  We had trouble thinking up words with x as it is not used a lot.  It is also a very tricky letter as it can make lots of different sounds.

We drew an x-ray of our hand.

We are working on our book for Captain Red.  This week we had to create a page showing things we NEED if we go into space, not things we want.

We are using our beautiful stuff to create pictures.  Then we are taking a picture of it and writing a sentence about it.

We went into space again!
This week the Spacedome from SciTech came to visit.  We got to climb inside and it really felt like we were in space.  It was dark and we zoomed into space.  We learnt about day and night and constellations.  It was very exciting.
