Term 1 Week 8

This week we found our caterpillars all rolled up in a coccoon.  We slowly opened the coccoon and our caterpillars had become beautiful butterflies.  This is a sign of new life just like Jesus coming alive at Easter.

This week we learnt about the letter b.  The letter b makes a 'b' sound as in buttons.  We covered our letter b with lots of big, beautiful buttons.

We covered the b in our book with blue things.

We made bunny masks.  Then we put them on and became bouncing bunnies.

We blew bubbles!

This week we used the iPads to take photos of things we had made during activity time. At the end of activity time some of us shared what we had been doing.

We learnt some new games this week.  This is a game with Alphie the Alphabet Worm.  It will help us to learn our letters.

We also learnt a game called War.  To win the war you have to have the highest number on your card.

We made some crosses like the one that Jesus died on.  But our crosses were happy crosses because we know that Jesus came back to life.  We put the word ALLELUIA on our cross.  Alleluia is a way of saying Hooray!

We also talked about why we see eggs, bunnies and chicks around at Easter time.  We see them because they are signs of new life and  Easter is all about new life.  We decorated our own Easter eggs, but you can't eat them!!!

The Year 6's acted out the Stations of the Cross.  We walked around the school and watched them all.

We hope you all have a wonderful Easter.  Don't forget you don't come back to school until Thursday next week.  Enjoy the break.

Term 1 Week 7

This week we learnt about the letter 'a'.  We discovered that it makes the 'a' as in ant sound.  We went hunting for ants so we could find out how many body parts and legs they have.  We found a big nest of ants to study.

Then we used our fingerprints to make the ants body parts and used textas to add the legs and antennae.

We also made some apples.  We could choose to make a crunchy green apple or a juicy red apple.  Some of them looked very yummy!

We also used apples to paint with!  Last week we had spaghetti pictures and this week we have apple pictures.  Painting with food is lots of fun.

We now have our very own alphabet book.  Each time we do a letter we can cover the letter, make something to glue in and finish the sentence.  This week we wrote 'a is for apple'.

We had another zero day.  This time Zero the Hero brought us the number thirty and we had to stick 30 pipecleaners on.  It was a lot of counting!

After reading the book 'The Very Hungry Caterpillar' by Eric Carle we made our own caterpillars.  They are very cute.

Then we made wings because our caterpillars are going to have a brand new life and come back as butterflies.  We made them as beautiful as we could.

In literacy this week we started some new activities.  We have four boxes and each group goes to one box and then we switch.  The boxes have lots of different activities.

These superstars are working from the writing box and are using their own writing books.

This group has chosen play dough from the fine motor box to help their wrists and fingers get stronger.

This group is doing puzzles and playing with sounds and letters from the sounds and letters box.

This group is acting out the story of Little Red Riding Hood in the book corner.

We read the story 'Little Red Riding Hood' and we decided that Little Red Riding Hood shouldn't have talked to the Big Bad Wolf because you shouldn't talk to strangers.  We discussed who a stranger is and sorted some photos on the smartboard into people we know and strangers.

We talked about what we should do if we were ever scared of a stranger or if a stranger tried to take us somewhere.  We even went outside and practiced yelling no and running to Mum or Dad.

We talked about people who can help us if mum and dad aren't there.  We could talk to a shopkeeper, a policeman, a teacher or if there was nobody else to help look for a mum with children like you.

We made a handprint that shows people we talk to if we think we are in trouble.

Miss R pretended to be a stranger and tried to trick us into coming with her but we were all too clever!  But Miss R tricked us on Friday afternoon because she pretended to be a stranger and left a comment on our blog asking us to tell where our school was.  Nearly all of us got tricked by her and thought we should tell the stranger where our school was!  So we all talked about how we have to be extra careful on the computer because we can't see who is writing to us.

One more week until Easter and a VERY long weekend!

Thank you to all those parents that have been leaving comments.  The children love reading them every week.

Term 1 Week 6

Wow! We are half way through term 1 already!  This term is flying by, probably because we have been so busy!

This week has been all about the letter 's'.  On Monday we discovered that Alphie the Alphabet Worm was missing one of his letters.  By singing the alphabet we worked out which one we thought it was and then we hunted all over the playground for it.  We found it hidden in one of the tunnels.

We talked about the name of the sound and the sound the letter makes.  The letter s makes a 'sssss' sound like a snake.

We drew pictures of things that started with s and some s' in the sandpit.

We also covered an s with some sparkly stars.

We played with spaghetti.  We thought of lots of words to describe it..... slimy, slippery, squishy.

We also used some spaghetti to make a spaghetti picture.  It was a bit tricky picking up that slippery spaghetti.

Check out our fantastic spaghetti art.

Then we decorated our own letter s with stars and made a spectacular sparkling star.

Mrs P organised some new things for our playground.  We have a stop and go sign so the bikes have to follow the road rules.

We also have a bike stop which is kind of like a bus stop but we are waiting for a turn on the bike.  Thanks Mrs P.

It is Saint Patricks Day on Sunday so we watched a video about St Patrick and then made our own shamrock so we could teach our families about the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, just like Saint Patrick did.

If you want to watch the story of Saint Patrick you can check it out here.

Check out these two superstars.  They did an amazing job coloring in Goldilocks and the Three Bears and they have cut them out so carefully.  Fantastic work!
